Every board game creator wants to design their games to be enjoyed by future players but the process to do this isn’t always obvious (I’m looking at you cognitive bias).

User experience (UX) design is about designing products for people to use more efficiently to their needs and in the case of board games, more enjoyably. Applying the six steps of UX design — empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test, and implement — to board game development results in more enjoyable board game experiences.

As a UX designer and a board game enthusiast I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly in board game design. At BoardGameUX I breakdown Nielson’s 10 usability heuristics applied to board games and collect useful resources for board game creators to apply to their own games.

I am also available as a UX design consultant, a role which can cover many things such as perfoming…

  • competitive research
  • usability heuristics
  • board game wireframing

and facilitating play testing sessions.
